K-5 Social Action Project

When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world. - John Muir

Each year, the children in classes K-5 choose a project to work on that will help the world in some way. The chosen project benefits a charitable organization that has an impact toward improving the quality of life for man, animal, and environment. The children learn about the organization, its goals towards making a positive change in the world, and how they as children can be part of that positive change.

2009 Project: This year, the children decided to help animals, particularly those who are endangered. They have chosen to help raise awareness about endangered turtles and birds. Their fundraising efforts will support organizations that study the habitats and migrations patterns of these animals, which in turn helps to determine environmental factors that are causing survival rates to decrease. Efforts to protect these species and their environments are enhanced through these studies.

2007 & 2008 Projects: Classes helped fundraise for Heifer International. They learned about Heifer's mission by watching video stories of families in far-away countries who have been empowered to lift themselves from hunger to self-reliance through the gifts of cows, goats, and other livestock. The chilren discussed ways in which animals help families sustain themselves by providing food and other products for personal consumption and for market. Then they helped raise funds by explaining to parents, friends, and congregants how to donate towards the purchase of animals. Through their efforts, we were able to raise thousands of dollars to donate to Heifer International.
